Rip Line Upgrade Yields Value-Added Results

Alan McIlvain Lumber Company of Marcus Hook, PA recently upgraded their ripping line to a new Weinig System Solutions Rip Line. The previous line was a manually fed, 31” arbor fixed Gang Rip Saw that discharged onto a set of hand-pull chains for width sorting. This new system includes:

  • Automated package breakdown with a Joulin Vacuum Lift with a partial pack extraction option.

  • ValuRip IV+ High Speed Rip Optimizing System.

  • Raimann KR 450 4M moving blade saw, capable of speeds over 266 ft. per minute, with a thickness capacity from 4/4 through 16/4 material.

The configuration of this flexible rip workcell allows for small batch runs and quick changeovers. The Raimann KR450 4M moving blade saw is ready for any cutlist and any width board without changing arbors.

The vacuum destacker and partial pack extraction feature allow for quick changeover of species and thicknesses. The operator can then run only as much of a particular pack as required to complete an order. The remainder of the pack can be easily removed and sent back to inventory, while the customer’s ‘lumber tracking system’ is updated with the partial pack information.

The combination of Raimann moving blade technology and an ink jet printer allows Alan McIlvain to combine orders and increase yield.

This has also eliminated the need to pre-sort lumber by width, making that time consuming process a thing of the past. Random width lumber can now be introduced (as multiple orders are now more efficiently grouped) to actually achieve higher yields and fulfill orders as needed.

The Valu Rip IV+ software is connected to the plant office and Alan McIlvain’s inventory control software. When a pack is pulled for production and placed on the package chains, the operator scans a barcode that uploads the package information.

The operator then activates the appropriate cutlist that has been preloaded via the ValuRip office package interface. Upon completion of the order, a custom report is generated and exported to Alan McIlvain’s inventory control system stating material usage and the amount of material remaining in the partial pack which is returned to inventory.

The installed system meets today’s demanding requirements for flexibility and quality, quick changeovers, and just-in-time production.
